It's pretty good. I recommend the Buta Kimchi
One of my main spots to grab something to eat. good location, clean, and awesome service. Very good job!
I am super impressed with their food. They serve REAL Japanese izakaya menu.
Love love love this place. I’ve been going over and over and ordering everything under the sun and it is all delicious, fresh, beautiful, just right. The fairly large menu may intimidate a bit if you are not used to izakaya food, but get over it, order a lot, you’ll enjoy it all. The great food is accompanied by am awesoem selection of Japanese beer, whiskey and sake. After the first visit, we were recognized and welcomed like family every time we ate there. We’ve always had the same sever, a lovely slightly older lady who was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, energetic, and seemed to be delighted with our relative knowledge and clear enthusiasm for their food. What a great experience, and even if we ended up spending a little bit more than we planned every single time, it was entirely our fault and fair for the superb quality.
Would certainly recommend visiting this place. Exceptional mood, yummy dishes, fantastic customer service. Keep it up.
I really like their dishes. I always get fantastic service there. The place is clean and the employees are always friendly. I highly recommend this place.
This is a hidden away gem. The atmosphere is welcoming, a place to sit, snack, and drink. Not an expert on izakaya food, but everything here was great and there is a wide variety of dishes. Anything from the chef's specials is recommended. Will definitely be comkong back to explore more of the menu.
A gem of a Japanese Izakaya restaurant that I totally did not expect to find in Chicago. Most of the menu portions were small but perfect for sharing across a large party: ginkgo nuts, first time trying them in Chicago; gyoza, just the right amount of thin, crispy outer layer and very juicy fillings; chicken liver, very savory and a bit zesty (one couldn't tell if it's a dessert or appetizer); tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled egg), freshly made with perfectly even texture. And there is the fish. Our Omakase and the Mackerel Sashimi prepared by the chef were as good as they come - neutral to taste complemented by the natural butteriness of each piece of fish. Izakaya Sankyu is exactly the type of quality, comfort -- and mostly importantly -- unpretentious Japanese food that I felt is especially lacking in cities across US. Izakaya Sankyu is a rare gem!
Service failure the second time. My wife and I went for dinner last week but was embarrassed by the small table. We were assigned a very small table even though there was regular table available. Half of our dinner had to wait, and we had to rush what had been served. This table should only serve one person for dinner. This was the second time we were embarrassed. About a year ago, we went during festival season. We didn't blamed the waiting, but was embarrassed by being ignore for 45 minutes. All those waiting in line, about four or five groups of customers, were not even talked to in that almost one hour of waiting. No waiter came to receive us, nor ask how many of us in a group. If not one of us insisted to wait, I would have left already. The service was normal when I came the second time. But last week, the memory of the first one came back again. Fairly to say, though their food was good, the service was not stable.
Very good izakaya dining. Great variety of items and selection of Japanese beer, whiskey, and sake. Highly recommended!
One of the best Japanese restaurants around for traditional Japanese food. The teriyaki is the best here.
Yesterday was our first time we came to that good restaurant. But It is absolutely not the last. We passed a splendid evening with the courteous service, with the high quality dishes and fine drinks and with the decent cost. We will absolutely come back in a short time.
I called to place a order. Their website prices r different then in store prices. What a joke of a place.
The local japan style. food is small
The food was great and the staff was really friendly. It was interesting to try the chef's special sashimi plate. The tofu was refreshing. The pork cheek was packed with flavor. My roommate loved the soba noodles. My favorite was the taiyaki. Next time, I will have to try their whiskey. I wouldn't bring a picky eater here. Just beware if they are busy because service can get really slow. I'd come back.here for sure.
Love this authentic Japanese izakaya! All the small plates were delicious...I can't wait to try more!
Literally the most true to Japan restaurant/bar I have ever been to, friendly staff and friendly customers made the amazing food all the better
Great food. Great service. Went there for dinner and ordered mostly grilled skewers. I would say the quality is similar to what you would get in Japan. The variety of skewers is also great compared to other places in the area. If you enjoy authentic Japanese food, I'd highly recommend this place. They also serve sushi and ramen; have not tried those yet.
The food there was above average.
The food here is delicious. Hard to find Japanese restaurants that serve more than just sushi, ramen, bento boxes, or your usual katsu / teriyaki. They have a lot of different seafood options like mackerel. Highly recommended.
Very authentic Japanese food. Omakase was fresh and delightful. Wide variety of japanese sake.
Love a large menu, and the sashimi quality is second to none.
The meals and service were beyond our expectations. I really liked the environment of this restaurant. Awesome spot to take my family out for lunch.
this is my family's favorite place to eat. amazing ramen. 10/10
Smaller, yet quite cozy Japanese restaurant. We asked to be seated in the area where you get to sit on the floor for a more authentic experience. Staff is extremely kind, polite, and attentive. I had a few different types of sushi rolls, golbi , and all were delicious, fresh and well made. Definitely recommend for a nice quiet dinner with good food.
I prefer their ramen over the one by Mitsuwa. The broth isn't too fatty and doesn't have a strong pork broth smell. Another I can recommend is the beef tongue, tender and taste good
Great service, floor and chair seating, and the food is yummy!A favorite spot we go to regularly.
Absolutely incredible! Food is fresh and extremely flavorful. Prices are reasonable, allowing for tastings of multiple items. Highly, highly, highly recommend!!
The dining room filled pretty quickly, as we were promptly seated at a table for three at lunchtime on a Saturday. We were greeted by very accommodating waitstaff with menus and hot tea. The sashimi was fresh and delicious, the menchi-katsu (fried meat cakes) was lightly breaded and crispy -- also delicious! Our bill was delayed a bit as there appeared to be some scrambling of orders at other tables, but we received it soon thereafter.
Great sushi place. The fish is very fresh. This is one you would like to go for high quality food with limited budget.
Great food and friendly service. I've been coming to this place at least couple times a year for about 20 years. It was introduced to me by my colleagues from the Tokyo office. They told me they will visit a place like this after work in Tokyo. Eat, drink, shoot the breeze before the last train home. They will order the little tapas-like dishes all night and finish with a bowl of noodle or ochazuke (green tea over rice). The Yakitori (chicken skewer) and Kimchee and pork are consistently good. I discover something new every year and some of my favorites get rotated out of of the menu like the shrimp ceviche. My favorite this year is the crab meat zosui (rice soup with egg and mochi).
Izakaya style (Japanese Tavern, Tapas). The most enjoyable restaurant experience for me but sometimes intimidating. You need at least hour and a half here. Restaurant offers a massive amount of food and drinks, ton of sakes, beers and Japanese single malt whiskeys from low to hi-end. Food from $5 to $40 per plate such as cook, raw, sushi, noodles, hotpot or bowl. Restaurant offers two different type of sitting from Japanese tatami room to western style. What you need to do here first is the order a bottle of beer or sake and spend some time with the menu. Order two to three dishes at the time and enjoy.
This spot is worth a try. They have large portions for fair prices. Constantly well organized and with great vibes. Highly recommended.
I told my friends about this place with my highest recommendations. I visit this place often. This recommendation is always successful. The dishes they serve are appetizing and the crew is attentive and cooperative. always when we go to this place we have a pleasing time. I warmly recommend this restaurant.
Very elegant and accessible place. They offer large portions and for economical rates. I enjoyed the food a lot and the staff were super amiable and informative. I recommend this place.
This place is my favored. I eat in plenty of restaurants but to this place I constantly return again and again. The crew is very receptive and the food they place on your table is so good. I am always happy to have a decent dinner in this restaurant. I recommend this place with pleasure.
Omg this place is authentic as it can get the food is amazing !!!! Im so happy I decided to come here ... the ramen the pretty good I love it !!! So rich in flavor and a good vegetable to broth ratio the noodles were on point!!! Fyi the sushi gets 10 out of 10
美味しい！！！The food is authentic and delicious, and the staff is warm and friendly. I feel like I'm back in Japan when I eat here!
Always a nice place to get sake Cha, zaru soba, and beef tongue. The sake list needs to be updated because some of the things listed on their list is out of stock almost every time we go there. Great quality fish for nigiri (: Love their appetizer menu. Would recommend.
Don't forget to try their chicken Teri roll. Very friendly staff, Grace was very nice.
Great food. The homemade pickles and grilled fish were delicious.
Food was good and fairly priced but service, while friendly, was not very good. Food came was delivered to our table one plate at a time and out of order, i.e. meals were delivered before sushi and we had to request items to be cleared when our server should have done it automatically. Restraunt needs updating and fixing up.
This restaurant is my first choice place. Of all restaurants I know I love it most. I never miss an opportunity to go to that place. when I want to go to a fair meal, this place comes straightaway to my mind. Great and food and a large list of dishes.well mannered staff members, and agreeable atmosphere. In addition to that, the pay is decent. I recommend this place with great pleasure.
This restaurant is my preferred one. I go to a lot of restaurants but to this one I go the most. The crew is very warm and the cooking they serve is so appetizing. I never decline to have a nice dinner in this place. Highly recommended.
Good food great service. Love going here even though I don't love close. Staff is friendly and food is tasty.
We had our 3rd wedding anniversary dinner here. By far the best and most enjoyable Japanese restaurant! Thank you Grace for your sweet hospitality!
Food was great and reasonably priced. Staff were super helpful.
Amazing delicious food! Affordable and delightful.
The food was decent, but we had the worst experience ever. We went there Sunday night at 8:30pm. Our server was an older lady who told us the kitchen will close at 9:30, so we needed to order soon. We understood, my husband worked as a server when he was in college. We ordered quickly, by like 8:45. The kept coming back every 2 minutes asking " you don't want anything else right". We replied that we were good. As the food came, she can't to rush us to eat. It was constant. She wanted us to pay the bill before we finished eating. By 9:30pm she wanted us out, saying the restaurant is closed. In every place, they state the restaurant closes at 10pm. But she basically pushed us out before we were even done eating. If they were in such a hurry, they could have told us before we ordered and we could have gone elsewhere. The worst experience ever. I would never return. Please hire better servers!! We are paying customers
